Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of increasing the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” (”organic” or “algorithmic”) search results for targeted keywords. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS) or the higher it “ranks”, the more searchers will visit that site. SEO can also target different kinds of searches. These include image search, local search and industry-specific vertical search engines.

As a marketing strategy for increasing a site’s relevance, SEO is a must. SEO efforts may involve a site’s coding, presentation and structure, as well as fixing problems that could prevent search engine indexing programs from fully spidering a site.

The letters “SEO” can also refer to “search engine optimizers”, terms adopted by an industry of consultants who carry out optimization projects on behalf of clients, and by employees who perform SEO services in-house. Search engine optimizers may offer SEO as a stand-alone service or as a part of a broader marketing campaign. Because effective SEO may require changes to the HTML source code of a site, SEO tactics may be incorporated into web site development and design. The term “search engine friendly” may be used to describe web site designs, menus, content management systems, URLs and shopping carts that are easy to optimize.

Internet marketing, also referred to as web marketing, online marketing, or eMarketing, is the marketing of products or services over the Internet. The Internet has brought many unique benefits to marketing, one of which being lower costs for the distribution of information and media to a global audience. The interactive nature of Internet marketing, both in terms of providing instant response and eliciting responses, is a unique quality of the medium. Internet marketing is sometimes considered to have a broader scope because it refers to digital media such as the Internet, e-mail, and wireless media; however, Internet marketing also includes management of digital customer data and electronic customer relationship management (ECRM) systems.

Internet marketing ties together creative and technical aspects of the Internet, including design, development, advertising, and sales. Internet marketing does not simply entail building or promoting a website, nor does it mean placing a banner ad on another website. Effective Internet marketing requires a comprehensive strategy that synergizes a given company’s business model and sales goals with its website function and appearance, focusing on its target market through proper choice of advertising type, media, and design.

Internet marketing also refers to the placement of media along different stages of the customer engagement cycle through search engine marketing (SEM), search engine optimization (SEO), banner ads on specific websites, e-mail marketing, and Web 2.0 strategies. In 2008 The New York Times published an initial estimate to quantify the user data collected by large Internet-based companies. Counting four types of interactions with company websites in addition to the hits from advertisements served from advertising networks, the authors found the potential for collecting data upward of 2,500 times on average per user per month.

From competing for customers, eyeballs and credit card numbers, every type of business can benefit from having both a Web site and a content syndication system.

A Content Syndication System, appear as a featured section of a Web site, topics may not necessarily relate to the Web site’s primary focus, but instead, may be used to generate interaction. Whatever the topic, the interactive nature of CSS is an important component, which makes it a particularly attractive means for businesses and Web site owners to communicate with their audience.

Just as businesses today realize the need and value of having a Web site, they are also beginning to understand the value that a CSS can have in connecting with customers and building ongoing relationships.

Consider these reasons for adding a CSS to your site:

Increased Traffic
Web sites generally provide information about a business, its products and services. This information is relatively static – you may update the look and feel of your site or add new products and services, but your customers generally know what to expect to see on your site when they visit it again.
However, a CSS, which changes with each new post, gives your customers reasons – even daily reasons if you latch onto a hot topic – to visit your site more frequently. This gives you the opportunity to expose visitors to your Web site more often, which is always a good thing. The more visits to your to your Web site, the more exposure to potential sales.

Search Engine Optimization
Our CSS can be used to boost the search engine rankings for your Web site. Search engines recognize that web pages with syndicated content are generally updated more frequently than Web sites, they often contain links, and syndicated pages are rich with relevant content.

Content Syndication can improve search engine optimization through:
Keywords. Relevant keywords, which are vital to search engine optimization, are often abundant throughout your postings. With a syndicated content, you can add more keywords when you talk about your company or your services. Once again, you are adding value to your Web site in terms of search engine optimization.

Viral marketing component. If you can create a buzz among your customers, they will help spread the word about your Web site and your business. They will even handle distribution for you by sending the links to your Web site to others!

Pay per click (PPC) is an Internet advertising model. This form of advertising is used on search engines, advertising networks, and content websites, such as blogs. With PPC marketing advertisers only pay when a user actually clicks on an advertisement to visit the advertisers website. When marketing on the search engines, advertisers typically bid on keyword phrases relevant to their target market. When a user types a keyword query matching an advertiser’s keyword list, or views a webpage with relevant content, the advertisements may be displayed. These ads are called sponsored links or sponsored ads. Sponsored ads are the ad links you see on the top and right side of a page when searching in google, yahoo, etc., above the organic results, or anywhere a webmaster or blogger chooses on a content page.

Although there are several PPC providers, Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing, and Microsoft adCenter are the largest networks as of 2007. Minimum prices per click, often referred to as costs per click (CPC), vary depending on the search engine and the level of competition for a particular phrase or keyword list. Additional, well-liked search terms can cost much more on popular search engines. The PPC advertising model is open to abuse through click fraud, although Google and other search engines have implemented automated systems to guard against abusive clicks by competitors or corrupt webmasters.

Pay per click campaigns can be categorized into two major categories: sponsored match (or keyword) and content match. Sponsored match campaigns involve the display of advertisements on search engine results pages, whereas content match campaigns involve the display of advertisements on publisher websites, newsletters, and e-mails.

There are other types of pay per click programs that target product or service searches and product comparison sites. Search engine companies may participate in more than one category. PPC programs do not generate any revenue solely from Web traffic for websites that display the advertisements: Revenue is generated only when a user clicks on the advertisement itself.

Three PPC Online Advertising Engines
Keyword-based pay per click advertisers bid on search terms—keywords consisting of words or phrases, and possibly product model numbers. When a user searches for a particular keyword, the list of advertiser links appears, where the ordering of those links is based on the amount bid for the given keyword. Keywords are the very heart of PPC advertising, and are guarded as highly-valued trade secrets by the advertisers. Many advertising firms offer software or services to help advertisers develop keyword strategies. Content Match, a service offered by Yahoo!, distributes the keyword ad to the search engine’s partner sites and/or publishers that have distribution agreements with the search engine company.

The following are notable PPC keyword search engines:
Ask.com
Baidu
Google AdWords
LookSmart
Microsoft adCenter
Yahoo! Search Marketing

Product engines are search engines for products, and let advertisers provide “feeds” of their product databases. When a user searches for a product, links to advertisers are displayed for that particular product. More prominence is given to advertisers who pay more; however, the user can typically sort by price.

The following are notable PPC product engines:
NexTag
PriceGrabber
Shopping.com
Shopzilla

Service engines allow advertisers to provide feeds of their service databases. When a user searches for a service, links to advertisers are displayed for that particular service. More prominence is given to advertisers who pay more; however, the user can typically sort by price or other criteria. Some pay per click product engines have expanded into the service space, while other service engines operate in specific vertical markets.

Google Caffeine is all the Buzz… Here are some questions and answers by Google’s very own Matt Cutts.

Q: How do I check out the Caffeine update?
A: If you search on http://www2.sandbox.google.com you can get a preview of how the search results will change over the next few weeks and months.

Q: It doesn’t look any different to me?
A: The Caffeine update isn’t about making some UI changes here or there. Currently, even power users won’t notice much of a difference at all. This update is primarily under the hood: we’re rewriting the foundation of some of our infrastructure. But some of the search results do change, so we wanted to open up a preview so that power searchers and web developers could give us feedback.

Q: Is this Caffeine Update because of Company X or Y is doing Z?
A: Nope. I love competition in search and want lots of it, but this change has been in the works for months. I think the best way for Google to do well in search is to continue what we’ve done for the last decade or so: focus relentlessly on pushing our search quality forward. Nobody cares more about search than Google, and I don’t think we’ll ever stop trying to improve.

Q: The url http://www2.sandbox.google.com doesn’t seem to work for mobile phones? I can only test on google.com, not google.co.uk?
A: That’s right. For now this is a only a preview, so we didn’t hook up a mobile version or an international version at this point. You’ll have to search on google.com to see the results right now.

Q: How do I give Google feedback?
A: If you want to give us feedback on how the search results are different, look on the search results page for a link at the bottom of the page that says “Dissatisfied? Help us improve.” Click on that link and type your feedback in the text box. Make sure to include the word caffeine somewhere in the feedback.

Q: Is there a way to give feedback in person?
A: Yes! If you want to give me feedback in person, I’ll be at Search Engine Strategies San Jose this week. I’m doing a site review panel on Thursday, or just walk up and say hello!

Update, August 11, 2009: I did a video interview about the Caffeine update with Mike McDonald. The Caffeine info begins about 1:15 into the video.

Update, August 12, 2009: Embedding the video interview directly:

The big news last month was that the three major search engines (Google, Yahoo, and MSN/Live) announced joint support for a new link element that enables engines to reduce their guesswork when it comes to identifying your site’s canonical URLs. This should make life easier for site owners, developers, and webmasters. Historically, when the big three engines gang up and announce a coordinated effort, it’s been wise to pay attention.

Canonical element is a line of code that you add to pages that may be duplicates. In this code, you designate the “canonical,” or “proper,” URL. Engines will note this URL and apply link popularity and authority to the canonical version instead of applying them to duplicate URLs. This should consolidate the authority and link popularity into a single URL, as opposed to splitting them among several similar URLs.

How Do You Use the Canonical Tag?
The syntax of the new canonical attribute is simple. Between the and tags on your page (title element and meta data), place this line:

<link rel=”canonical” href=”http://www.yoursite.com/correct-url/” />
The actual URL in the line above is for the actual canonical URL that you’ll put in your file.

As an example, let’s assume you have duplicate content issues that result in all of the following URLs resolving correctly, and that the first URL in this list is the “correct” one:

http://www.yoursite.com/correct-url/

http://yoursite.com/correct-url/

https://www.yoursite.com/correct-url/

http://www.yoursite.com/correct-url/default.aspx

http://www.yoursite.com/correct-url/?from=sidenav

and so on…

To apply the canonical element, just add the following line to the section of all pages:
<link rel=”canonical” href=”http://www.yoursite.com/correct-url/” />

How does Google find websites and web pages matching your query, and determine the order of search results?

In the simplest terms, think of searching the web as looking in a very large book with an impressive index telling you exactly where everything can be found. When you perform a Google search, googles programs check their index to determine the most relevant search results to be returned (”served”) to you.

There are three key processes to search results:
Crawling
Indexing
Serving

Does Google know about your site? Can we find it?
Crawling is the process by which the Googlebot discovers new and updated pages to be added to the Google index.

Google use a huge set of computers to fetch (or “crawl”) billions of pages on the web. The program that does the fetching is called Googlebot (also known as a robot, bot, or spider). Googlebot uses an algorithmic process: computer programs determine which sites to crawl, how often, and how many pages to fetch from each site.

Google’s crawl process begins with a list of web page URLs, generated from previous crawl processes, and augmented with Sitemap data provided by webmasters. As Googlebot visits of each these websites it detects links on each page and adds them to its list of pages to crawl. New sites, changes to existing sites, and dead links are noted and used to update the Google index.

Google doesn’t accept payment to crawl a site more frequently, and we keep the search side of our business separate from our revenue-generating AdWords service.

Can Google index your site?
Googlebot processes each of the pages it crawls in order to compile a massive index of all the words it sees and their location on each page. In addition, we process information included in key content tags and attributes, such as Title tags and ALT attributes. The Googlebot can process many, but not all, content types. For example, Google cannot process the content of some rich media files or dynamic pages.

Does the site have good and useful content that is relevant to the user’s search?
When a user enters a query, our machines search the index for matching pages and return the results we believe are the most relevant to the user. Relevancy is determined by over 200 factors, one of which is the PageRank for a given page. PageRank is the measure of the importance of a page based on the incoming links from other pages. In simple terms, each link to a page on your site from another site adds to your site’s PageRank. Not all links are equal: Google works hard to improve the user experience by identifying spam links and other practices that negatively impact search results. The best types of links are those that are given based on the quality of your content.

In order for your site to rank well in search results pages, it’s important to make sure that Google can crawl and index your site correctly thus the importance of search engine optimization.
